Obituary for
Holloway W. Mark
Holloway – Mark W., formerly of Montclair, New Jersey, leaves his loving wife of 48 years, Langdon, and devoted son, Andrew (Elizabeth), and grandsons, William and Nicholas. Mark is survived by two sisters, MaryLee and Susan and their families. Born in 1945, he graduated from Ohio State University School of Business and received an MBA from Columbia University. He was Vice President in the Controllers Department, Finance Division at Goldman Sachs where he worked for forty-two years. Mark was Chief Financial Officer of Goldman Sachs Clearance at the time of his retirement. Mark worked for GS in London and Tokyo, assisting with the regulatory guidelines during the firm’s international expansion. He also served as the Chairman of the financial industry’s SIFMA Capital Steering Committee and served as President of the Board of SIFMA’s Financial Management Society (FMS).
One of Mark’s legacies was assisting Goldman Sachs, as well as the finance community generally, in thinking through the technical rules around capital support of a financial institution’s operations. For a period of time, Mark was Goldman Sachs’s key communicator to the regulators in discussing how the firm assessed risk. Mark worked openly with the regulators to develop a framework for industry. His unique combination of technical knowledge, communication skills and personal integrity made him the ideal candidate for such a position within the industry. Mark is credited with promoting acceptance by regulators of realistic risk metrics more complex than a “haircut.”
His involvement in community affairs included service for two terms as President at each of his local churches, Union Congregational Church in Upper Montclair and the First Unitarian-Universalist Congregational Society of Brooklyn, as well as his co-op board. Mark’s dedication and kindness will be missed by family, friends and colleagues. He will be remembered as a loving father and husband.
