Joe was my dad's lifelong best friend and his long-time upstairs neighbor. He was kind of like an uncle to me. My dad had known him since they were kids and he was like an honorary member of my family--he fought with both my parents and never failed to tell them how dumb he thought they were or praise them for doing the right thing. He was also the only older journalist I have known on a personal level and I am happy to be carrying out his legacy.
I know my family will miss him, and as my mom (who knew him for a mere 40 years?) said, "It feels like there is still unfinished business." Basically---Joe, why did you have to leave us, we weren't done fighting yet--which if you know my family, is the truest expression of belonging.
(I am glad to say I was usually in the middle, never on Joe's bad side.)
You are missed but will not be forgotten and we loved you.
Rest in Peace
