Obituary for Daniel Joseph Marshall

Daniel Joseph Marshall was born in Brooklyn on February 8, 1941, to Daniel Patrick Marshall and Anne Winifred Curtin Marshall. He attended St. Vincent Ferrer grammar school and was a graduate of Regis High School and College of the Holy Cross, later earning Master’s degrees from New York University and Queens College.

During his early adult years he traveled widely, living for a time in California where he worked in the mailroom of the library at UC Berkeley and later spending several seasons in New Hampshire with apple-picking crews.
Upon returning to New York, he became a librarian, working first in the Brooklyn Public Library system and subsequently at several colleges, including St. Francis College and Touro College. In 2002, he was appointed Director of the library at TCI College of Technology and served in that capacity for nine years.
Daniel maintained a strong and active connection to the Catholic Worker, a movement founded by Peter Maurin and Dorothy Day and focused on social justice concerns. For several years he served as co-director of Arthur Sheehan House, a CW residential house of hospitality in Brooklyn.

A prolific writer and poet, his special interests were memoir and commentary, and he enjoyed a long association with the Authentic Writing workshops based in Woodstock, NY.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John Marshall, and brother-in-law Arthur Muller. He is survived by his wife, Dee Kittany, sisters Mary Anne Muller and Therese Allam (Medhat), brothers William (Gem) and Joseph (Pam) and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
